Introducing Environmental Intelligence as a business discipline for distinguishing macro-level industry shifts from short-term operational distractions.

Ahead of the Current™

When you're busy running an organization, some of the most important things can be the hardest to see.

Ahead of the Current™ helps leaders recognize the patterns, pressures, and disconnects that can influence performance, people, and an organization's ability to remain relevant.

The book introduces Environmental Intelligence—a practical system for executives, managers, and founders to go beyond operations, recognize what’s around them, and guide their teams through disruptions.

Educators and business students will find it an invaluable resource because it tackles real-world business challenges through case studies and field guides that translate strategic theory into actionable leadership habits.

Adapting to change really keeps you in the game, but building resiliency determines whether you’re still standing after it.
— Michelle M. Bowman

Written for leaders and executive teams who cannot afford to react late.

With constant change, it’s often hard to clearly see the invisible currents beneath them. Environmental Intelligence is the capacity to read underlying market shifts, resource constraints, and operational moves before they manifest on the surface.
— Michelle M. Bowman

Ahead of the Currentuses Environmental Intelligence as an organizational leadership practice to proactively build:

  • Continuous awareness: recognizing internal and external currents affecting your organization

  • Early interpretation: seeing patterns before they become problems

  • Decisive action: responding while there's still time to influence the outcome

In doing so, you strengthen your evolutionary resilience by developing systems that recognize environmental pressures coming from both external and internal “currents”, rather than waiting for a crisis that forces your hand (and often costs you).

Change demands attention.

Survival demands perspective.

Ahead of the Current™ offers a different lens for viewing the organization as a whole, surfacing patterns and pressures that can be difficult to recognize from within day-to-day operations.

What can the Galápagos teach us about organizational survival?

The Galápagos Islands provide the unexpected thread running through Ahead of the Current™. Their ecosystems reveal what happens when conditions change, resources evaporate, relationships matter, and the ability to respond determines what survives.

The book uses those lessons as a memorable way to examine the conditions that allow organizations to remain viable as their own environments change.

RECOGNIZE. INTERPRET. EVOLVE.

About the Author

Michelle Bowman built her career in Silicon Valley during the formative years of personal computers and the internet, an extraordinary place to learn what happens when change moves faster than expected.

Over three decades, she worked with industry powerhouses in technology, healthcare, and consulting, often leading communications and marketing through product launches, industry shifts, organizational disruption, most recently, the rollout of the healthcare exchanges, and the complexities of the pandemic.

Her career has given her a front-row view of how organizations respond when the world around them changes, sometimes successfully, sometimes too late.

Those experiences became the foundation for Ahead of the Current™ and the concept of Environmental Intelligence, a business leadership practice centered on three currents that influence an organization's continued relevance, both inside and out: Information, Trust, and Purpose.
